SMALL PROJECT ARCHITECTURE
Little Big House – Room 11

Here’s what the Jury had to say:

RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE – NEW HOUSES AWARD
Little Big House
The Little Big House by Room 11 is a challenge. This house is both defensive and yet expansive. It is private yet commands extensive views. It serves and accommodates a family and yet challenges the rituals of daily life. What are we to think? The simple rectangular box that is the Little Big House is intensely private. Openings are made specific to function; either for air, light or vista. Conversely the space created is ambiguous and multi-layered allowing for interpretation and reinvention according to the needs of the moment. Openings are intentionally located and focus on specific features; the tree, the garden, the sky, the channel, the shadows. We are made aware of the track of the sun, the passage of time. In this house space too becomes fluid and function becomes transitory. This is a small house with big ambitions.

SMALL PROJECT ARCHITECTURE AWARD
Little Big House
Room 11 has built a small house that delivers an abundance of space by asking us how we go about our daily lives and how much space do we really need? The Little Big House is 160m2 for a family of four. The house is made of inexpensive materials used innovatively. It is made of timber, polycarbonate and some windows. Its form is deceptively simple to make.  The simple rectangular box that is the Little Big House is intensely private. Openings are made specific to function; either for air, light or vista. Conversely the space created is ambiguous and multi-layered allowing for interpretation and reinvention according to the needs of the moment.  This house does more with less and so poses the right questions for our future if we are to become more sustainable and not waste precious resources. See the full project here

Allens Rivulet House 2
The Allens Rivulet House 2 by Room 11 revels in its unyielding grid and contradictory spaces. Spaces shift around the centrifugal kitchen while they deform to views and vistas. We are able to relate variously to the outside by a number of diverse spaces; from the enclosed cocoon, followed by a variety of blurred indoor/outdoor experiences and ultimately to the horizon and sky from the roof. This house commands the rise of land and asserts a tough skin to the elements. Yet the warmth of the interior and its controlled connection to the climate and outdoors speak of an intimate understanding of daily life for a young family.  The Allens Rivulet House 2 reminds us of the power of geometry and exhibits sensitivity to climate, context and the variety of spaces able to better connect us to our physical surroundings. It is considered an innovative addition to the long tradition of impressive architect designed Tasmanian houses. See the full project here
